A truck driver was allegedly assaulted by civic volunteers at the Bhelbari checkpoint in Harishchandrapur after refusing to pay ₹1,000 as demanded. The incident took place when Ruhul Ali, a lorry driver transporting cows from Dalkhola in Uttar Dinajpur to Mardangi, was stopped at the checkpoint under Rashidabad Gram Panchayat. Ali claimed that he agreed to pay ₹500, but the volunteers refused, dragged him out of the vehicle, and took him inside a police camp, where he was allegedly beaten.
A video of the assault has surfaced, showing multiple civic volunteers involved in the attack. Ali has lodged a written complaint at the Harishchandrapur police station, naming three civic volunteers. Eyewitnesses present at the scene stated that despite the driver’s protests, the assault continued inside the camp. The footage has led to widespread concern over the incident.
Police have confirmed that a case has been registered based on the complaint, and an investigation is underway. Senior officials have assured that appropriate action will be taken against those responsible. Authorities are reviewing the video footage and statements from witnesses. The role of the accused civic volunteers and their actions at the checkpoint are currently under scrutiny.
